Five things that a Bestman should not say in their Wedding Speech…!

If you were to ask any Bride or Mother of the Bride, ‘What are the three things that you are most worried about on the day of the Wedding?’, they would say:

  1. Will the Wedding Guests enjoy the meal?
  2. Will the Band / Music entice the Wedding Guests to dance?
  3. What will the Bestman say?

Many a Bestman has crossed the line through the content and delivery of their Bestman Speech, saying / doing things that are inappropriate, not funny and that embarrass the Bride & Groom.

There are many things that a Bestman can / should say during their Bestman Speech; however, equally there are many things that a Bestman can’t / shouldn’t say during their Bestman Speech – here are five of them:

  1. Make a negative comment or make fun about the Bride’s dress and how she looks
  2. Mention the Bride’s previous boyfriends / partners
  3. Tell rude / vulgar jokes
  4. Mention the Groom’s previous girlfriends / partners
  5. Share inappropriate stories / memories of what you know / remember about the Groom in their growing up years

Make a negative comment or make fun about the Bride’s dress and how she looks

The Bride is the most important person at a wedding; it is her day, and nobody else’s. Making a negative comment about her attire, her appearance, how she looks is really a no-no, no matter how subtle. She may laugh at it or laugh if off; however, it will have been heard by the audience, your biggest critics (and could be on video forever)

Mention the Bride’s previous boyfriends / partners

Mentioning previous boyfriends / partners of the Bride, whether they are in the audience or not (especially the former) is strictly a no-no. It is embarrassing for the Bride and will upset her, and will annoy the Groom

Tell rude / vulgar jokes

Many, if not all Bestmen, think that their Bestman Speech and they should be funny, hilarious and have the audience falling out of their seats with laughter…not true…! Yes, do tell jokes, but not rude or vulgar jokes. Do not feel that you have to be funny, you don’t. You need to be yourself and be authentic

Mention the Groom’s previous girlfriends / partners

Like the Bride, mentioning previous girlfriends / partners of the Groom, whether they are in the audience or not (especially the former) is strictly a no-no. It is embarrassing for the Groom and upsetting and will certainly annoy and upset the Bride

Sharing inappropriate stories / memories of what you know / remember about the Groom in their growing up years

Yes, of course, you should share stories, your memories about the Groom either in their growing up years, teenage years and adult years; that is what a Bestman’s Speech is all about and what the audience want to hear i.e., great stories. They are also a great way to bring in and add humour and laughter into your Bestman’s Speech; however, they must not upset, embarrass or annoy the Groom and the Bride.

If in doubt, leave it out…!
